A pair of goals from sophomore
Cecilie Povlsen and several key saves from junior goalkeeper
Ayano Kurosawa helped lead the No. 24-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team to an impressive 3-0 victory at No. 8 Cumberland University (Tennessee) on Saturday afternoon in Lebanon, Tennessee.
This was the Grizzlies' first victory over a ranked opponent since the 2022 season and the 11th win in program history over a team featured in the NAIA Top 25 poll.
Povlsen found the back of the net with 28 seconds remaining in the first half to break a scoreless duel between the two ranked opponents.
The forward struck once again in the opening moments of the second half, giving the visitors a 2-0 advantage in the 55th minute. She beat Cumberland goalkeeper Hannah Thornell in a one-on-one situation. Junior
Kendra Davis had delivered a perfect pass to Povlsen, who managed to get behind the Phoenix defensive unit.
Both of Povlsen's goals, her first this season, came in a reserve role.

Later, the Grizzlies (6-2-1) scored an insurance goal as senior
Pernilla Westergren successfully converted a penalty kick during the 83rd minute.
Cumberland (7-2-0) outshot GGC by a 16-8 margin, including an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. That's where Kurosawa stood tall, matching her career high with 11 saves. The victory was her second shutout of the 2024 season. She has been in goal for five of the team's six wins this fall.
Davis matched Povlsen in having two shot attempts in the victory.
Coach's Corner
"This is a big win for us. Our goal right before halftime changed the match and created positive momentum for us. We were playing the ball long and looking to get into halftime 0-0, but Cecilie had another plan. I was really pleased with our defensive performance against a really good offensive team (Cumberland)," said Head Coach
Dr. Mike Giuliano.
Turning Point
The Grizzlies scored a goal with 28 seconds remaining in the first half to take positive momentum into halftime of a matchup between nationally ranked teams. Sophomore
Cecilie Povlsen found the back of the net after the ball bounced around in front of the Cumberland goal.
