Short-Handed Men’s Soccer Loses Road Match

The Georgia Gwinnett College men's soccer team couldn't overcome a penalty kick and playing a player down for a majority of Tuesday's road match, eventually losing 1-0 at Tennessee Wesleyan University in Athens, Tennessee.

A foul inside the 18-yard box in the 18th minute resulted in a penalty kick for the Bulldogs (2-2-2). The call also resulted in a red card being assessed. That forced GGC (5-3-1) to play the remaining 72 minutes with only 10 players on the pitch.

Cian Gantley converted the penalty kick for the lone goal in the match.

The Grizzlies attempted five of their seven shots during the first half.

Tennessee Wesleyan also received a red card in the 70th minute, meaning that both teams were at even strength for the final 20 minutes of Tuesday's action.

The visitors threatened late in the contest when senior Patrick Gawliczek Rodriguez missed just right of the opposing goal, following a crossing pass from sophomore Joshua Orue.

Sophomore Djordje Djurasinovic and freshman Kevin Diaz each had two shot attempts to lead the Grizzlies' effort.

Junior goalkeeper Dagoberto Romero made four saves as the Bulldogs placed five of their seven shots on goal.

"We got put in a tough situation. The guys responded well after the early adversity. I'm proud of the fight they put in. It is tough to play almost 70 minutes down a player. Once it got even strength we had a couple of good chances," said Head Coach Steve DeCou.
