Visiting Governors State University (Illinois) scored a season-high eight goals to defeat Georgia Gwinnett College 8-1 in a rain-soaked men's soccer match on Wednesday evening at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
Andrea Croce netted the first two goals in the first 15 minutes to give the Jaguars (5-2-2) an early advantage.
GGC (5-4-1) fought back with freshman
Kevin Diaz scoring his third goal of the season to trim the deficit to 2-1 in the 23rd minute.
However, that momentum was short-lived – lasting 91 seconds – as Governors State quickly regained its two-goal advantage when Jero Bencomo scored the first of his two first-half goals. Bencomo's shot from distance in the 38th minute gave the visitors a commanding 5-1 halftime lead.
Javier Losa, Bencomo and Croce each scored two goals as Jaguars' offensive attack managed to collect 19 shots.
Wednesday's contest began a four-match home stand for GGC.
Turning Point
After scoring a goal to get within a goal, at 2-1, in the 23rd minute, visiting Governors State quickly regained the two-goal margin by finding the back of the net 91 seconds later.
