Baseball Rounds the Bases for More Records

Georgia Gwinnett College baseball keeps updating its record book this spring.

For the second straight day, the No. 3-ranked Grizzlies set a school-record for offensive production with a 38-3 victory against Florida National University on Saturday in the Continental Athletic Conference Showdown at the Grizzly Baseball Complex. The team then closed out the weekend with a 13-0 triumph against Voorhees University (South Carolina).

GGC (39-6) also set program records for having 19 steals and drawing 22 walks in the first game against the Conquistadors (21-22).

The performance came after the Grizzlies scored a then-record 34 runs in a 34-3 victory against Crowley's Ridge Collee (Arkansas) in Friday's opener of the CAC Showdown.

That meant GGC outscored its opposition by an 85-6 margin during the weekend and 102-14 for the week after beating Brewton-Parker College (Georgia) 17-8 on Tuesday.

"This weekend was to prepare us for the postseason. Our goal from the start was to establish dominance and be the type of team that we know we are. We can't just show up for an inning or two during the postseason, we need to put everything together throughout the entire game," said Head Coach Jeremy Sheetinger.

In Saturday's first game, the hosts scored 10 runs in the second inning and added 13 runs in the fifth inning.

Cobb defenseJunior Jackson Cobb paced the team's 20-hit offensive attack by recording a pair of doubles and having a triple. He drove in seven runs and scored twice. Junior Henry Daniels scored a school-record six runs and tied another mark with four walks. Daniels hit a pair of home runs as part of a 3-for-3 performance.

Senior Ajay Sczepkowski went 3-for-4 and scored four runs while having three RBI. Classmate Blaze O'Saben collected six RBI and scored three times. He hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning that broke the runs record, giving the hosts a 36-3 lead.

Junior Paul Winland Jr. connected on a three-run home run in the fifth inning, while classmate Joe Quelch tallied two hits and scored three runs in the opening triumph.

"It never is about one guy. That's what makes for a great team. It's about everybody knowing their role and every guy knowing what we're trying to do. The way these individual pieces have figured out how to come together, while dominating their roles, is a big reason for the success we're enjoying," said Sheetinger.

In the nightcap, the Grizzlies jumped out to a 6-0 lead through three innings after Quelch hit an RBI double to right field. He later scored the sixth run of the contest on a run-scoring single by junior Matthew Lee.

Quelch hitQuelch then drove in a pair of runs with a triple in the sixth inning. He scored four runs and went 2-for-2 with three RBI in the victory.

"Up and down the lineup, we have guys who hit the ball hard and run the bases extremely well. Between Blaze, Braxton or Ajay someone is usually on base in front of me. It's then my job to bring them home," said Daniels on the depth of GGC offensive lineup.

Winland Jr. added, "The (opposing) pitcher has to think about all nine spots in our lineup. That causes a lot of pressure on the pitchers. They throw pitches that they think have to be perfect, which helps gives our hitter good pitches to hit."

Meanwhile on the mound, senior left hander Kaleb Hill improved to 7-1 on the season after scattering two hits across six scoreless innings in the nightcap. Junior right-handed pitcher Ben Harris struck out seven Florida National batters during five innings to remain undefeated on the season at 8-0.

COACH'S CORNER
"I find different ways to challenge these guys and each time they've answered the bell. This group is always hunting to get better, and they love it when the heat gets turned up on them. We turned it up on them with another challenge this week. We wanted to see their best and play dominantly. I'm proud of what this group accomplished this weekend," said Head Coach Jeremy Sheetinger.
