Early Scores Pave Path for Baseball Home Victory

The No. 3-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team scored early and often in picking up a commanding 17-8 victory against Brewton-Parker College (Georgia) on Tuesday afternoon at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.

The Grizzlies (36-6) scored five runs in each of the first two innings to build a 10-2 lead. Junior Paul Winland Jr. led the early offense by bringing home three runs with a first-inning single, coupled with a fielding error. He then connected on a three-run home run to left field in the next inning.

Junior Henry Daniels went 4-for-4, scored four runs and had three RBI. The designated hitter tallied singles in his first two plate appearances before having an RBI triple in the third inning and finished the day with a solo homer during the eighth inning. Daniels also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Junior Joe Quelch collected three hits and stole three bases as the hosts tallied 19 hits in the triumph.

Senior Tyler Clayton struck out four batters in the starting assignment. The left hander became the second pitcher in program history to achieve 300 or more strikeouts in a career, joining classmate Gage Williams, who accomplished the feat last Friday.

Junior reliever Tyler Martin tossed a scoreless sixth inning to pick up the victory, improving to 2-0 on the season. Juniors Jaden Bankston and Chandler Wood each recorded two strikeouts out of the bullpen in a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, respectively.

COACH'S CORNER
"Offensively, we did a good job of punching runs early. I thought some of our relievers did a good job attacking the strike zone. We got to play a lot of players as we continue our evaluation for postseason play. The game created some opportunities to put guys in different scenarios and different positions," said Head Coach Jeremy Sheetinger.
