Baseball Sweeps Brewton-Parker on Road

The No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team posted double-digit scores in sweeping a doubleheader at Brewton-Parker College (Georgia) 13-9 and 15-1 on Saturday afternoon in Mount Vernon, Georgia.

The Grizzlies (26-5) scored in seven of their nine offensive innings in the opener.

GGC plated three runs in the first inning with junior Braxton Meguiar lining a run-scoring double down the left field line before coming home on an RBI single from senior Ajay Sczepkowski. Junior Jackson Cobb executed a safety squeeze bunt to give the team a quick 3-0 advantage.

Junior Henry Daniels opened the fourth inning with his eighth home run of the season.

One inning later, junior Cohen Wilbanks cleared the bases with a double to left-center field. GGC's lead grew to 9-2 lead by the sixth inning on an RBI single from junior Paul Winland Jr.

Senior starting pitcher Gage Williams struck out eight batters in 7.1 innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. The right hander ended his outing by tossing three consecutive scoreless innings.

Locklear pitchBrewton-Parker (14-17) made things interesting in the eighth inning by plating seven runs and brought the go-ahead run to the plate. However, junior reliever Jeremiah Locklear got Michael Son to fly out to center field to end the threat and salvage the 11-9 lead for GGC.

The visitors added two key insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Daniels lined an RBI double off the wall in right-center field to score junior Joe Quelch. Daniels would later score on a sacrifice fly from senior Blaze O'Saben to extend the lead to four runs, 13-9.

Locklear retired all three Baron hitters he faced in the ninth inning to secure his first save of the 2024 season.

In the nightcap, the Grizzlies used a pair of three-run innings early to build a 6-1 lead. Winland Jr. connected on a three-run home run deep over the extended center field wall in the opening frame.

Junior Brett Dingess legged out a double to score Winland Jr. during the third inning. Daniels followed with an RBI ground out to cap the productive early offense.

The Grizzlies hit a pair of homers in a seven-run fifth inning, with junior Bryce Lesher connecting on his first round tripper of the season to extend the lead to 9-1. Senior Ajay Sczepkowski hit his team-leading ninth home run deep over the left field wall to bring home three runs.

Senior left hander Tyler Clayton scattered five hits and had six strikeouts in four innings to pick up his sixth win of the spring.

COACH'S CORNER
"I was pleased with our Game 2 response in being able to play Grizzly baseball. Playing on the road allows us to have new experiences where we play on a new field, leave early and deal with new umpires. Today, we even had to wait around during a weather delay. We handled all of the elements to pick up two wins," said Head Coach Jeremy Sheetinger.

TURNING POINT
The Grizzlies used early offense in each contest to pick up a pair of road wins. GGC scored three runs in the first inning of both games. The first four batters all reached safely to plate two runs in the opener, while junior Paul Winland Jr. connected on a three-run homer during the nightcap.
