Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis senior
Andoni Garmendia won five matches to win the inaugural UTR NAIA Nationals singles title this weekend at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.
FINAL RESULTS
The tournament's top seed was victorious by identical 6-2 set scores in Sunday's championship match against Gabriele Solda from the University of the Cumberlands (Kentucky).
Garmendia previously had won two matches on Friday and Saturday during the tournament, hosted by Universal Tennis. He defeated GGC senior teammate
Aleksandr Kalinin, the No. 4 seed, in a hard-fought, three-set match in Saturday's semifinal round. Garmendia rallied after dropping the opening set by a 7-1 tiebreaker to win the final two sets 6-1, 5-3.
The senior opened the event with three straight-set victories.

Kalinin also registered three wins by straight sets, including a 6-3, 6-0 win against Cumberlands' Luis Marcos in the quarterfinal round.
GGC freshman
Gian Durrer defeated No. 7 seed Lafarga Gonzaga from Milligan University (Tennessee) in three sets by 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-1 scores in his first match. He then dropped a 7-6 (4), 7-5 match to No. 10 seed Juan Cruz Alcon from Cumberlands in the Round of 16 on Friday evening.
