The Georgia Gwinnett College and University of Mobile (Alabama) women's soccer teams battled to a draw for the third consecutive season, with goals in each half resulting in a 1-1 decision Saturday afternoon on the Rams' home pitch.
Sophomore
Kendra Davis gave the Grizzlies (5-3-4) a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute by netting her second goal of the season. Freshman
Caroline Andersen contributed on the tally for her team-leading fourth assist of the season.
Mobile's Raegan Latiolais tied the match with an unassisted goal in the 56th minute.
Saturday's match was similar to a 2022 meeting when both teams battled to a 1-1 draw after the Rams scored in the 56th minute. In 2021, the Grizzlies evened things during the 87th minute in a 2-2 draw.
GGC had a statistical edge in this fall's encounter, outshooting Mobile by a 21-8 margin and having a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior
Kyara Armenta and Davis each tallied four shots, while freshman
Riko Yasuzawa added three shots.
Junior goalkeeper
Matilda Johansson made two of her three saves during the first half.
"It's not the result that we wanted. You could tell which team played on Thursday (GGC's 4-1 loss at William Carey University) and which team hadn't played in a week. We changed the point of attack and got the ball wide for a cross to set up our goal. Good things happen when you get the ball wide after changing the point of attack," said Head Coach
Dr. Mike Giuliano.
The series between the GGC and Mobile women's soccer programs has featured trends. The Rams won the first three encounters before the Grizzlies picked up successive victories in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The teams have now battled to three straight draws.
