Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mistakes Costly for Women’s Soccer in Close Home Loss

The No. 24-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team couldn't overcome a two-goal halftime deficit in losing 2-1 to Campbellsville University (Kentucky) on Sunday afternoon at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.

The Tigers (4-5-4), receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll, scored in the opening five minutes and then added a second goal in the final five minutes of the first half.

Freshman Cecilie Povlsen got the Grizzlies on the scoreboard with 57 seconds remaining in the match by scoring after receiving a quick pass from senior Kyara Armenta.

GGC (5-4-4) tallied five of its seven shots in the second half.

Campbellsville held a 12-7 shot advantage, highlighted by seven shots being on goal. The team's goals came from Lina Beerah, who redirected a shot from Chloe Holt's crossing pass into the back of the GGC net early in the match. Then, Bethin Boyld scored off a rebound following a save on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box by Olja Ivanovic in the 41st minute.

COACH'S CORNER
"Really good teams take advantage of every little mistake you make. That's what happened on their two goals. We played hard and well and competed until the very end. We're not that far away (from beating quality opponents), but we just make mistakes here or there in a match," said Head Coach Dr. Mike Giuliano.

TURNING POINT
Campbellsville converted scoring chances in the opening and last five minutes of the first half to pick up the Sunday triumph. Those first half tallies held off GGC's late rally attempt.
