Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Regains Winning Ways

Senior Pernilla Westergren scored a goal and provided an assist to spark the Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team past Lindsey Wilson College (Kentucky) with a 2-1 victory Sunday night at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.

The Grizzlies posted their first win since defeating Thomas University (Georgia) exactly a month earlier (6-2 on September 22) at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.

Westergren netted her first goal of the 2023 season and just the second of her career when she converted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the right side of the opposing goal in the 13th minute of the match. Senior Kyara Armenta played the ball to Westergren after the ball was redirected off a Blue Raider defender.

That score came seven seconds after freshman Gabriela Rosas struck the left post with a shot.

Later, a left corner kick from Westergren resulted in GGC's second goal. The ball found the right foot of sophomore Saga Andersson near the right post, where the forward found the back of the net in the 45th minute to give the hosts a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Westergren dribble
Lindsey Wilson quickly responded with a goal, making it 2-1, when Ashiat Naluggwa scored in the 50th minute. It was the visitors' only shot on goal in the match.

Ten of GGC's 13 shots came in the first half, led by Armenta's match-high five shot attempts. Westergren registered three shots, while junior Aurora Miglio added two shots for the Grizzlies.

Junior Matilda Johansson and freshman Ulrike Duyck split time protecting the GGC goal, with Johansson playing a scoreless first half. The Grizzlies limited Lindsey Wilson to five shots and three corner kicks across the 90 minutes of action.

COACH'S CORNER
"This was a step forward. We competed tonight. We played really good soccer in the first half. Pernilla got better as the match went along and she does a lot of the dirty work that we need done to win a match like tonight," said Head Coach Dr. Mike Giuliano.

TURNING POINT
The Grizzlies doubled their lead as sophomore Saga Andersson buried a shot from close distance off a corner kick from senior Pernilla Westergren. The goal came with 59 seconds left in the first half and gave the hosts a 2-0 lead.
