Softball Seeks to Continue Winning Ways

The Grizzlies are 9-1 in March
The red-hot Georgia Gwinnett College softball team seeks to keep its winning ways going against in-state Thomas University (Ga.) on Tuesday, March 12, with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. at the Grizzly Softball Complex.

The Grizzlies enter the action with a 21-5 record and have won six straight games, part of a 9-1 mark so far in March. The team is coming off a doubleheader sweep Sunday against the University of South Carolina Beaufort, a team that had lost just once before coming to Lawrenceville.

The team is averaging 8.5 runs per game this month, has out-hit opponents by a 72-to-23 margin in the last six games and has scored 10 or more runs in four contests.

Rossetti battingJunior RaeQuinn Rossetti was named the Association of Independent Institutions' Hitter of the Week after scoring 11 runs and batting .500 last week at the top of GGC's lineup. She is batting .362 on the season and leads the team with 25 runs scored and 13 stolen bases.

Senior Aubree Cox is tops on the team with a .424 batting average, slightly ahead of junior Sydney Willhite (.423). Willhite leads the team with 27 RBI and five home runs. Senior Elyssa Melton is hitting at a .418 clip and has seven doubles.

GGC is hitting .373 as a team and has outscored the opposition by a 204-to-60 margin this spring.

The Grizzlies have limited the opponents to a .205 batting average behind the strong play of senior pitcher Taylor Hansis and circle mate sophomore Piper Wagner. The duo has combined for an 18-3 record and 14 complete games this season. Hansis stands 12-3, with a team-high 89 strikeouts, while Wagner is 6-0 and has tossed five shutouts. Both have been named A.I.I. Pitcher of the Week twice already this spring.

Admission to home games will be $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens, military personnel with identification and children more than five years of age. GGC students, faculty and staff with a valid Claw Card receive free admission. Also, children under five years old receive free admission.

MEET THE COACHES
Georgia Gwinnett College: Kat Ihlenburg is in her seventh season leading the Grizzlies. She has guided the program to a 262-91-2 record and four trips to NAIA postseason play.
Thomas: Bill Wilson is in his 11th season leading the Night Hawks. His Thomas teams have compiled a 258-232 record. Wilson has won 445 games in 18 seasons as a collegiate head coach.
 
ROSSETTI GRABS WEEKLY HONOR
Junior RaeQuinn Rossetti is the reigning Association of Independent Institutions' Softball Hitter of the Week after batting .500 and scoring 11 runs in GGC's eight games last week. She collected 10 hits and was successful on all eight stolen base attempts as the Grizzlies had a
7-1 record for the week.

GGC is 9-1 so far during March to improve to 21-5 on the season. The team is averaging 8.5 runs per game this month and has scored 10 or more runs in four contests.
 
TAKING THE EXTRA BASE
Over 30 percent of the Grizzlies' hits this season have gone for extra bases (56 doubles, 13 triples and 15 home runs). GGC's 84 extra-base hits are compared to the 125 total hits by opponents this season.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Thomas leads 8-5, but the Grizzlies swept last year's doubleheader in Thomasville, outscoring the Night Hawks 9-6 in the games.
 
SCOUTING THE NIGHT HAWKS
Thomas stands 7-9 on the season after splitting a home doubleheader with USC Beaufort on Saturday to begin conference play. The Night Hawks are 2-6 in road games in 2019.
