Winning Ways Continue for No. 1 Softball with Sunday Road Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College softball team flexed its muscle to match a 16-game winning streak for the second time this season, hitting three home runs in a doubleheader sweep at Montreat College (N.C.) Sunday afternoon.

The Grizzlies (35-2) overcame early deficits to post both victories – 10-2 in five innings and 7-3.

GGC trailed 2-1 after three innings in the opener. However, a four-run fourth inning put the team ahead for good. A base hit from sophomore Anya Vandersip scored junior Aubree Cox for a 3-2 lead. Then, freshman Holly Janco drove in a pair of runs with a double.

Junior Elyssa Melton hit the first of her two home runs in the day, having a three-run homer in the fifth inning to add insurance runs to the team's lead in the first game. She opened the second contest with a solo blast in the first inning. However, Montreat scored three times in the bottom of the frame to take another early advantage.

But Georgia Gwinnett College once again overcame the deficit. Runs in the third and fourth innings tied the contest, and Janco provided the winning tally in the fifth inning after getting on base with a walk.

Junior Tori Robinson hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. GGC scored a run in six of the seven innings in the second game.

Turning Point

After falling behind 3-1 early in the second game, Georgia Gwinnett College slowly chipped away at the deficit by scoring a run in the third and fourth innings. The visitors then took the lead, 4-3, in the fifth inning after a leadoff walk to freshman Holly Janco. The Grizzlies added a solo home run one inning later and scored an insurance run in the seventh inning.
