Box Score 2 Pitchers Taylor Hansis and Piper Wagner tossed shutouts as the top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College softball team swept No. 13 Faulkner University (Ala.) 4-0 and 3-0 Tuesday evening at the Grizzly Softball Complex.
The victory came on the same night that GGC (45-2) was once again the unanimous No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA, garnering all 19 first-place votes in results announced by the national office.
The Grizzlies also extended their winning streak to 26 games and Faulkner was the fourth straight victory against a top-15 opponent.
Hansis, a junior, had eight strikeouts and scattered four hits in the opener. Then, freshman Wagner had six punch outs and stranded eight Faulkner baserunners in the nightcap.
Senior Niki Cook provided the offense in the first game with run-scoring singles in the third and fifth innings. She went 2-for-3 in the contest.
In the second game, junior Tori Robinson connected on a two-run double in the sixth inning to break open a 1-0 score.
Turning Point
In the second game, GGC was clinging onto a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Faulkner loaded the bases with one out. However, freshman pitcher Piper Wagner got two ground balls to end the threat. The first ground ball was hit to third base and sophomore Quentin Staton got the force out at home plate. Then, a ground ball to junior Tori Robinson ended the scoring opportunity. GGC would add two insurance runs later in the game.
