Box Score 2 A two-run double by junior Tori Robinson provided late-inning heroics as the top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College softball team completed a doubleheader sweep Saturday at Talladega College (Ala.). The Grizzlies rallied in the nightcap 4-2 after winning the opener 11-2 in five innings.
Trailing 2-0, GGC began its second-game comeback in the seventh inning when sophomore Sydney Willhite hit a run-scoring single to bring home freshman Maegan Harden – cutting the deficit in half.
Then, with two outs, Robinson lined a double to center field that scored freshman Holly Janco and sophomore RaeQuinn Rossetti to give the visitors the lead. Robinson would later score an insurance run as junior Aubree Cox hit a RBI single.
In the pitching circle, freshman Piper Wagner retired the Tornadoes in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the victory.
Talladega (19-19) hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to take a lead in the game.
In the opener, GGC (41-2) connected on three home runs – two coming in the first inning – and scored eight runs in the third inning. Two of the long drives came off Cox's bat, including a three-run homer in the third inning. Her first home run was a solo effort in the first inning, after Robinson hit a two-run homer in the frame.
Junior pitcher Taylor Hansis picked up the victory in the circle, scattering three hits in three innings.
Junior Brianna Fickes led the team's 14-hit offensive attack, going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in. Cox went 2-for-4 in the game with four RBI. Rossetti tallied two hits, while senior Niki Cook added two hits for the Grizzlies.
Turning Point
Down to its final out, GGC had the answer as junior Tori Robinson hit a two-run double to center field to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 advantage for the visitors. The Grizzlies ended up scoring four times in the seventh inning to complete the doubleheader sweep.
