Women’s Soccer Facing Two Nationally Ranked Opponents to End Regular Season

The Grizzlies won their last match when facing a nationally ranked opponent
The No. 12-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team will end the regular season with two stiff road matches against nationally ranked opponents.

First, the Grizzlies (12-3) travel to No. 17 University of Mobile (Ala.) on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m. Then, they play at No. 1 William Carey University (Miss.) in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Monday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m.

GGC's No. 12 national ranking marks the highest NAIA Top 25 poll ranking in program history.

The team prepared for the challenging final-week tests with a 7-0 triumph Wednesday afternoon at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. Five different players found the back of the net in the victory.

Freshman Victoria Bischof leads the team with seven goals and 19 points. Seniors Caitlin Berry and Lauren Moss each have scored six goals, while freshman Joy Mertzig has added five goals this fall.
 
MEET THE COACHES
Georgia Gwinnett College: Dr. Mike Giuliano is in his second season leading the Grizzlies, compiling a 26-7-2 record. He was named the 2017 Association of Independent Institutions' Coach of the Year. For his career, Giuliano has compiled a 424-164-54 record within his stints at Wheaton College (Ill.), San Diego State University (Calif.), Westmont College (Calif.), Santa Barbara City College (Calif.) and Trinity International (Ill.). He has won eight national Coach of the Year Awards at different collegiate levels. His Westmont teams posted a 194-42-15 record in 11 seasons and won four NAIA national titles in a five-year span from 1999 to 2003. Giuliano has posted a .702 career winning percentage.
Mobile: Brian Person has a 164-78-18 record in his 12th season leading the Rams. He has led the program to nine straight appearances in the NAIA national tournament.
William Carey: Danny Owens is in his 14th season guiding the Lady Crusaders.
 
BIG TESTS
Georgia Gwinnett College plays matches against two nationally ranked opponents in preparation for the Association of Independent Institutions Soccer Championships Nov. 9-10 in Lawrenceville. The Grizzlies are 1-2 this season against opponents that were ranked in the NAIA Top 25 poll on the date of the match. The team defeated No. 10 Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) 2-1 on Oct. 19.
 
SEVENTH HEAVEN
GGC matched its season-high goal output for a match when it scored seven goals in Wednesday's road win against University of South Carolina Beaufort. The team also found the back of the net seven times in a home victory against Thomas University (Ga.) on Aug. 31.
 
BALANCED ATTACK
The Grizzlies feature a balanced offensive attack with freshman Victoria Bischof leading the team with seven goals. Seniors Lauren Moss and Caitlin Berry have each scored six goals. Freshman Joy Mertzig has added five goals.

SCOUTING THE RAMS
Mobile stands 10-5 on the season and is 4-2 at home in 2018. The Rams have lost their last two matches, falling 2-1 to No. 4 Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) and 3-1 to No. 1 William Carey (Miss.). The team hosts Florida College on Oct. 25 before playing GGC.
 
SCOUTING THE LADY CRUSADERS
William Carey is the top-ranked team in the NAIA with a 14-1 record. The team has won 10 straight matches. The Lady Crusaders begin the weekend playing Florida College on Saturday.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Mobile has won all three meetings – each decided by 2-0 scores. The latest matchup came in 2016.
 
William Carey leads 2-0-1, including a 1-0 victory in the 2015 NAIA Opening Round in Hattiesburg. The teams battled to a 2-2 draw earlier that season.

Georgia Gwinnett College hosts the 2018 Association of Independent Institutions Soccer Championships on Nov. 9-10 in Lawrenceville. The top-seeded Grizzlies will face No. 4-seed Washington Adventist University in the semifinal round Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
