On their special night, the 14 seniors of the No. 19-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team helped the program pick up its biggest win with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory against No. 10 Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) on Friday night at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
The Grizzlies (11-3) scored their highest nationally ranked victory in the seven-year history of the program.
And, it came after the team's seniors were honored during a pregame ceremony and in front of a large and vociferous crowed on Gray Out Night as part of GGC's Homecoming festivities. It was also the final home match of the regular season.
Senior
Lauren Moss scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute on a perfectly executed shot into the upper right corner of the goal from 25 yards away. Four minutes earlier, freshmen
Joy Mertzig and
Victoria Bischof teamed up to tie a match that the hosts had trailed since the final seconds of the first half. Bischof beat the Lindsey Wilson goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation.
Both players scored their team-leading fifth goals of the season.
Georgia Gwinnett College dominated most of the second half against the Blue Raiders (6-3-2). Junior goalkeeper
Elisa Randel made two saves, and the Grizzlies outshot the visitors 16-to-12 in the match.
Coach's Corner
"I'm speechless. We came back after experiencing the emotions of going down with two seconds left before halftime. We hadn't allowed a shot for nearly 11 minutes, then (Lindsey Wilson) gets a wide open breakaway. We then went to a formation that we have never talked about, and it led to our goals. It worked. I thought Elisa had her best game at GGC. This is a big emotional win for us," said Head Coach
Dr. Mike Giuliano.
Turning Point
The Grizzlies increased the pressure on its nationally ranked opponent in the second half. A give-and-go play between freshmen
Victoria Bischof and
Joy Mertzig created the scoring chance for the game-tying goal in the 72nd minute. Mertzig's pass inside the 18-yard box perfectly led Bischof to the scoring opportunity. Four minutes later, senior
Lauren Moss drilled a shot to the upper right corner, giving GGC a lead that it wouldn't relinquish.
