Box Score A season-high five goals helped the Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team earn its first home triumph of the 2017 season, defeating the University of the Cumberlands 5-0 Friday evening at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
The Grizzlies (2-3) have won consecutive matches, both in shutouts. In the process, GGC Head Coach Dr. Mike Giuliano picked up his 400th career collegiate coaching victory.
Junior Melissa Hanken led the offensive attack with two goals. She found the back of the net on a rebound to give GGC a 2-0 advantage just before the first half concluded. She later added her second goal of the match in the 72nd minute. Hanken leads the team with three goals scored on the season.
Junior Caitlin Berry scored one goal and added an assist in the victory.
Junior Macarena Errazuriz put the home team ahead in the 25th minute. She was on the far post of a corner kick from senior Bristol Countess.
Junior Ana Gonzalez rounded out the goal scorers with a tally in the 68th minute. GGC scored three times in an 11-minute span of the second half.
The Grizzlies held Cumberlands to just two shot attempts for the match. The Patriots attempted the first and last shot of the match. However, GGC recorded 36 shot attempts in between.
Turning Point
The Grizzlies were beginning to take control of possession and forcing the action midway through the first half. Junior Caitlin Berry hustled down the left sideline and forced a corner kick. Senior Bristol Countess delivered a high arcing ball toward the back post. Junior Macarena Errazuriz was able to put the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of the match. GGC scored four additional times due to his high pressure style of play.
