No. 13 Men's Soccer Wins Home Opener, Fourth Straight Match

Box Score

No. 13-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College is beginning the find the back of the net on a regular basis. The Grizzlies scored a season-high five goals in a convincing 5-1 triumph against Middle Georgia State University in the 2017 home opener Thursday evening at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.

GGC (4-0) has scored nine goals in their last two matches. The Grizzlies have started a men's soccer season with four straight victories – a program first.

The team got on the scoreboard in the seventh minute on the first goal of the season from freshman Michael Weber. He would add a second tally early in the second half to give GGC a 3-1 advantage.

Middle Georgia State would square the match on an unassisted goal from Jack Arra in the 17th minute. It marked the first goal the Grizzlies have allowed this fall.

Then, in the 31st minute senior Samuel Sampaio Gomes drilled a shot from inside the 18-yard box to regain the lead for GGC.

In the second half, junior Herb Sevilla and sophomore Carlos Delarosa added goals for the hosts.

Turning Point

With the match tied at one goal apiece, junior Andrew White sent a long ball from the defense toward the box. Samuel Sampaio Gomes was able to control the ball, beat a defender, and find the back of the goal for the eventual game-winning tally in the 31st minute.
