No. 13 Grizzlies Split on Day Two of Gulf Coast Invitational

The 13th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett softball team split on Saturday at the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala., improving to 15-5 on the season.

The Grizzlies finished pool play with a 2-1 record, defeating Missouri Baptist (2-5) in game one 4-1.  In the evening, Georgia Gwinnett entered the Gold Bracket and was edged by No. 12 Campbellsville (Ky.) 9-6.

With the loss, the Grizzlies now face Lyon College (Ark.) on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.

Against Missouri Baptist, starting pitcher Taylor Hansis pitched a gem for the Grizzlies, surrendering just one run on six hits while striking out six batters in the 4-1 GGC victory.

The Spartans scored their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by first baseman Stephanie Worth.

GGC responded with two runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead.  First baseman Hailey Burnham tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI-single to left while left fielder Aubree Cox gave GGC its first lead of the day with a sacrifice fly to deep left, scoring catcher Anya Vandersip.

In the top of the fifth, Georgia Gwinnett pushed two more insurances runs across the plate, using an RBI-single to left by Vandersip and a sacrifice fly to right by RaeQuinn Rossetti to advance their lead to 4-1.

Down to its final three outs, Missouri Baptist loaded the bases in the seventh, but could not get the runs in, propelling GGC to the 4-1 victory.  Missouri Baptist's starter Andrea Chessor was credited with the loss in the contest, surrendering four earned runs on nine hits.

In the nightcap against 12th-ranked Campbellsville, the Grizzlies held a 1-0 lead in the first behind an RBI-triple by Rossetti, but the Tigers responded with a two-run second to take a 2-1 lead.

Campbellsville (8-5) pushed its gap to a five-run, 6-1 lead in the fourth.  Pinch hitter Alexis Smith made it 2-1 with a two-run single to shallow left before a two-run single to center by designated player Rebecca Smith carried the Tigers to a 6-1 advantage.

Georgia Gwinnett tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the fifth with a five-run rally.  First, center fielder Niki Cook made it 6-2 with an RBI-single to left.  Next, Rossetti drove in her second run of the contest with an RBI-single to deep short before Cook scored on a Tiger throwing error to make it 6-4.  Facing a 1-0 count, Burnham ripped a double to the left-center gap to score Rossetti, bringing the Grizzlies within one, 6-5.  Third baseman Sydney Willhite tied the game with a slap shot single back to the Campbellsville pitcher to make it 6-6.

Campbellsville regained a 7-6 lead in the fifth and would later score two more insurance runs in the sixth off a two-run home run by left fielder Mia Aldridge to seal the 9-6 victory.  GGC's Hansis was credited the loss while CU's Neely Quint received the win.

On Sunday, GGC will face Lyon at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.
