Box Score The Georgia Gwinnett men's soccer team posted its third straight victory on Saturday night, defeating Columbia International (S.C.) 1-0.
The Grizzlies (3-0-1) needed just one goal early in the second half to lift them over Columbia International for the victory. After a scoreless first half of play, Jack Gurr gave the Grizzlies a boost in the 48th minute, netting the eventual game-winning goal on a hook shot to the far right corner of the net. Junior forward Samuel Sampaio Gomes worked his way to 18-yard box and made a swift turn to his right side, flicking a touch pass to Gurr. After a stutter step to his left, Gurr ripped his third goal of the 2016 season past CIU's keeper for the score.
"I was very pleased with the clean sheet tonight," stated GGC head coach Steve DeCou. "We got great work from some of the first-year Grizzlies as well as the veterans. Columbia International did a good job keeping their lines compact and this made it difficult for us to play."
In goal, senior Lewis Sharpe collected his second shutout of the season while tallying three saves. The GGC defensive line allowed just three shots in the Grizzlies' winning effort.
DeCou continued, "We played a great second half to break CIU's pressure down. Now, it's time to prepare for Hastings and the challenge we will face against a ranked opponent."
Georgia Gwinnett is back in action on Friday when they travel to the Midwest to face No. 25 Hastings (Neb.) at 4:15 p.m. Eastern in the first of two matches for the weekend. While in Nebraska, the Grizzlies will also face Concordia (Neb.) on Sept. 10 at 6 p.m.
