The No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett baseball team gathered its 10th series sweep of the 2016 season on Sunday as the Grizzlies defeated Texas A&M-Texarkana 9-1 in their final contest of the three-game series.
Georgia Gwinnett (38-1) is on its second winning streak of the season and has won 13 straight games.
The Grizzlies scored nine runs Sunday on 13 hits, bringing the weekend total of runs to 35 against the Eagles.
The Grizzlies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of play off an RBI-double by second baseman Jereid Woods and an RBI groundout by first baseman Zac Rinehart. Georgia Gwinnett continued its offensive pressure in the fourth, adding a run for the 3-0 lead, and pushed its gap to 5-0 in the fifth. In the fourth, third baseman William Paschal drove in Rinehart with an RBI-double. Rinehart previously reached on a one-out double prior to Paschal's at bat. In the fifth, an infield chopper hit by center fielder Josh Merrigan, coupled with a fielding error, plated the fourth and fifth runs of the game.
In the seventh, the Grizzlies pushed their lead to 8-0 with a three-run home run by Rinehart. The shot was his seventh of the season.
The Eagles (22-12) scored their first and only run of the game in the seventh on an RBI-single by catcher Bobby Kramer.
The Green and Gray regained its eight-run, 9-1, advantage in the top of the ninth with an RBI-single by designated hitter Marcus McCorkle.
GGC starter Adam Clark (4-0) received the win, pitching four scoreless innings while striking out three batters. Relievers Jake Wright, Tyler Souris, Austin Smith, Will Solomon, and Jeremy Hutchison each contributed to the Grizzly victory, providing five innings of scattered relief. TAMUT's Teddy Henderson was credited with the loss as he gave up five runs, three earned, on six hits.
The Grizzlies are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Athens, Tenn., to face off with No. 9 Tennessee Wesleyan in a Top 10 showdown. The nine-inning contest is set for 1:00 p.m.
