Grizzlies Complete Senior Weekend Sweeping Georgetown (Ky.)

The No. 21 Georgia Gwinnett softball team concluded its Senior Weekend celebration on Sunday with a sweep of Georgetown (Ky.) in its final two games of the four-game series.

Prior to the doubleheader's start, all seven of GGC's 2016 seniors, consisting of Ashley Beyke, Alycia Fields, Alyssa Hathcoat, Tori Heinemann, Katie Lange, Rachel Stahlman, and Haley Thompson, threw out ceremonial first pitches to their respective family members.

Sunday's victories give the Grizzlies the season series win over the Tigers as GGC took three out of the four games.

Behind the superb pitching performance of freshman Taylor Hansis, Georgia Gwinnett captured game one with a 5-2 victory.  The freshman pitched a complete game, striking out six batters while allowing just two runs on four hits.

The Grizzlies capped off Senior Weekend with a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Tigers in game two.

GGC head coach Kat Ihlenburg reflected on Sunday's sweep, "Taylor pitched great for us in game one.  She commanded the zone and did a good job with getting outs in key situations.  Plate discipline was the deciding factor in both games' outcomes.  I'm thrilled to cap off our Senior Weekend celebration with two wins."

Third baseman Brashante Dareus had a clutch day at the plate for the Grizzlies, going 3-for-6 while driving in four runs.  In game two of the doubleheader, the junior Freeport, Bahamas, native propelled the Grizzlies to victory with each of her three hits.  In the bottom of the fourth, Dareus recorded an RBI-single, while she ripped an RBI-triple to the right field wall in the sixth.

Dareus' key hit of the day came in the final inning where she connected with an RBI-single for the Grizzlies' 5-4 walk-off victory.

Thompson (3-for-6, 1 RBI, 1 run scored) and Fields (2-for-5, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored) were also key contributors to the Grizzlies' two victories.

The Grizzlies return to action on Tuesday when they host NCAA Division III foe Illinois Wesleyan in doubleheader action.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. with game two beginning approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
