The eighth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team built a big lead early Tuesday night, then had play cut short due to severe weather in a 13-3 victory over visiting Robert Morris (Ill.) at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.
The two teams waited through nearly an hour-long weather delay midway through the sixth inning before the game was called. The win improves GGC to 18-0 overall on the season, while RMU falls to 3-3.
Sophomores Brady Hamilton and Marcus McCorkle each drove in three runs apiece for the Grizzlies while senior Trey Haygood scored a game-high three runs.
Senior right-hander Davis Adkins improved to a team-leading 5-0 on the year by tossing all six innings, striking out nine batters while surrendering three runs.
Georgia Gwinnett broke out the bats early under clearer skies, scoring nine runs in the first inning by sending 12 batters to the plate. McCorkle, Trevor Bradley, Chris Aichinger, Trumon Jefferson and Josh Merrigan all had run-scoring hits.
The Grizzlies added three more runs in the second inning, using a two-run double from Hamilton and another RBI base-knock from Aichinger.
Robert Morris plated single runs in the first, third and fifth innings, but Adkins was well in control in allowing just five hits.
The Grizzlies' last run came in the bottom of the fifth when Haygood scored the game's final run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of McCorkle.
Ian Zimmerman (0-1) suffered the loss for the Eagles.
Georgia Gwinnett and Robert Morris will wrap up their two-game series on Wednesday with a single game starting at 4 p.m. in Lawrenceville.
Tickets for Wednesday's game are $5 for adults, $3 for youth, seniors, and military, and free for children under five. All members of the GGC community receive free admission with their Claw Card.
