Box Score The Georgia Gwinnett men's soccer team tied its single-season shutouts record on Saturday, recording its 10th clean sheet of the 2016 season with a 5-0 victory over Bob Jones (S.C.) on Senior Day.
Prior to Saturday's match, the Grizzlies honored their 2016 senior class, consisting of Callum Mordey, Matti Puranen, Lewis Sharpe, and Cameron St. Prix Mitchell.
"What a great way to send out the four seniors," exclaimed head coach Steve DeCou. "It was a great all-around performance by the team. We were good in all phases of the game. We came out with no injuries or suspensions. Now, we will turn our full attention to Fisher and the A.I.I. Tournament in Denver."
The Grizzlies (11-3-3) closed out the 2016 regular season scoring three goals in the first half while netting two more in the final frame. Junior Jack Gurr led the Grizzlies to the 5-0 victory, recording a hat-trick in the contest while accumulating 10 points in the match.
For the second match in-a-row, Gurr connected with defender Andrew White for a corner kick-to-header combination for the Grizzlies' first goal of the contest. Gurr's ball landed in the middle of the box, allowing White to head the ball into the back of the net.
Gurr scored his first goal of the match in the 33rd minute off a cross from Callum Lees to give GGC the 2-0 lead. Three minutes later, Gurr landed his second goal of the contest with a one-timer off a touch pass from Myles Barber.
Georgia Gwinnett, which held the 3-0 lead at the intermission, pushed its advantage to 4-0 in the 68th minute when Gurr capitalized on a defensive coverage miscue by the Bruins, scoring his third and final goal of the match to complete the hat-trick.
Lees scored GGC's final goal of the match with 23 seconds remaining in the contest, sealing the 5-0 GGC win.
Bob Jones (6-10-1) received 14 saves from goalkeeper Isaac Landry in the loss while the Bruin offense managed four shots, landing two on goal.
The Grizzlies are now 5-0 all-time against Bob Jones, outscoring the Bruins 19-2.
GGC has now won eight of its last nine matches as the Grizzlies have not experienced a defeat since Sept. 17's 4-3 loss to WVU Tech (W.Va.).
Next up for the Grizzlies is a trip to Denver, Co., for the Association of Independent Institutions' Men's Soccer Championships Nov. 11-12. The four-team tournament will take place at the Dick's Sporting Goods Soccer Complex on Field 8. The top-seeded Grizzlies will face fourth-seeded Fisher (Mass.) at 6:00 p.m. Eastern.
