GGC Captures 50th Program Win, LeFevre Breaks Records in Victory over Faulkner (Ala.)

Box Score

It was a historic night in Lawrenceville for the Georgia Gwinnett women's soccer team as the Grizzlies captured the squad's 50th win in program history with a 4-1 victory over Faulkner (Ala.).  During the match, senior Nikki LeFevre broke the all-time career goals and career points marks, scoring two goals while tallying an assist in the contest.

LeFevre scored her 28th career goal in the first half of play to tie the all-time scoring record held by Mary Vernetti.  LeFevre also broke the points record, tallying an assist in the 71st minute, before extending the record to 70 career points with her second goal of the match in the 76th minute.  LeFevre's second goal also broke GGC's career goals record, setting the new mark at 29.

"Nikki exemplifies everything we hope for in our program," exclaimed GGC head coach Chris Kouns. "She dedicated herself to become a striker that defends, and it has been a learning process for her.  She is a hard worker, and I am very proud of her accomplishment!"

The Grizzlies (6-6-1) jumped out to the 1-0 lead just four minutes into the match.  Junior Amy Morland fired a point-blank shot at the Faulkner keeper who deflected the attempt to Samantha Buchanan's feet, allowing the Jackson, Calif., native to score her first goal as a Grizzly.  LeFevre's first goal of the match extended GGC's advantage to 2-0 in the 13th minute.  The Grizzly defense did not allow a Faulkner shot in the first half of play, to maintain its 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.

After trading possessions throughout the first 25 minutes of the second half, Georgia Gwinnett pushed its lead to 3-0 when Tiffany Rodriguez netted her third goal of the season.  Sophomore Lauren Moss lifted a long ball from midfield to LeFevre who pushed a cross from the right side of the box to Rodriguez.  Immediately, Rodriguez responded with a left-footed blast to put the Grizzlies ahead 3-0.

GGC scored its fourth and final goal of the evening when LeFevre's record-setting strike landed in the back of the net.  The McDonough, Ga., native worked her way through the box, flipping a deflection over a Lady Eagle defender before punching the right-footed strike between the posts.

Faulkner (3-7-1) would score its lone goal of the evening just 23 seconds later when Kayla Wilson juggled her way through the box before turning on a GGC defender and firing a right-footed shot to the lower left corner of the net.

GGC goalkeeper Sophie Hoare picked up her fifth win of the season, tallying two saves in the contest.

Georgia Gwinnett continues its homestand Wednesday, Oct. 12 when the Grizzlies host Point (Ga.) at 7:00 p.m. at the Grizzly Soccer Complex in Lawrenceville.
