Box Score The Georgia Gwinnett men's soccer team recorded its eighth shutout of the season on Saturday, ending a double-overtime contest against the Cumberlands (Ky.) in a 0-0 draw.
"Tonight's result was not what we had in mind against the Cumberlands," stated GGC head coach Steve DeCou. "We had several opportunities to execute, but just couldn't get the ball into the net. While there is some debate on whether or not the final goal was or was not in the net before time expired, the result of the contest shouldn't have come down to that moment. Tomorrow, we are right back at it with a quick turnaround against Oglethorpe."
The Grizzlies (8-3-3), who have won six of their last seven matches, outshot the Patriots (5-8-3) 27-8, leading 10-5 in attempts at the intermission.
GGC had two potential game-winning goals called off during the second overtime period. The first potential game-winner was negated by an offside call while sophomore Andrew White's shot attempt while time expired, which landed in the back of the net, was called off by the match officials as the ball was ruled to not have crossed the goal line prior to the final horn sounding.
Senior goalkeeper Lewis Sharpe notched three saves in the match, bringing his season total to 51. With his three saves, Sharpe has recorded 50 or more stops in each of his four seasons as a Grizzly.
Georgia Gwinnett is back in action Sunday when the Grizzlies host NCAA Division III foe Oglethorpe (Ga.) to conclude GGC's 3rd Annual Homecoming Weekend. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
