Grizzlies Edged by No. 5 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 2-0

Box Score

The Georgia Gwinnett women's soccer team's two-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday evening as the Grizzlies dropped a hard-fought battle to No. 5 Lindsey Wilson 2-0.

The Grizzlies (7-7-1) held the Blue Raiders (8-3) scoreless in the first half of play, outshooting Lindsey Wilson 6-2 in the opening period.  GGC had three opportunities to score the go-ahead goal in the first half, but all three attempts at the net hit the crossbar before being cleared out by Lindsey Wilson's defensive back line.

Lindsey Wilson broke the silence in the 62nd minute as Emelie Liljered landed an unassisted strike on frame for the 1-0 Blue Raider lead.  Liljered created her own chance by stepping through the GGC defensive line before tapping a slow roller into the net.

The Blue Raiders scored an insurance goal in the 85th minute to secure the 2-0 victory over the Grizzlies.  Liljered fired her second attempt of the night at point-blank distance, but GGC's goalkeeper Sophie Hoare made a glove save that bounced directly to Anika Koemm's feet.  Koemm's reflexes responded immediately as she ripped the rebound into the net for the second Lindsey Wilson goal of the match.

Georgia Gwinnett head coach Chris Kouns reflected on his squad's effort, "I am immensely proud of the heart and effort our young women showed tonight.  When you are playing the fifth-ranked team in the country, you are only given a few opportunities to finish and compete at that level.  We created those types of opportunities four times tonight as three balls hit the crossbar and the fourth ball was cleared off the line by Lindsey Wilson's defense.  Statistically, we were able to outshoot them 10-9 and that is also something that shows progress from last year.  As we continue to build this program, that type of showing will be something we can all be proud of."

Georgia Gwinnett continues its homestand Wednesday, Oct. 19 when the Grizzlies host No. 12 Cumberland (Tenn.) at 6:00 p.m. at the Grizzly Soccer Complex in Lawrenceville.
