Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. – There seemed to be a wall over the Holy Cross goal on Friday evening, and the 13th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett men's soccer team was unable to break through, ultimately falling 1-0 to the Saints in the opening match of the Goshen College Classic.
"We just weren't good enough in front of goal tonight," GGC head coach Steve DeCou said. "We created enough chances to win, but we have to get better going forward. There are still some positives to take from this, and we'll be hoping to bounce back against a tough Goshen squad tomorrow."
The Grizzlies appeared to dominate the run of play for much of each half as they out-shot the Saints by a sizable 24-9 margin, but HC goalkeeper Brian Aldrich proved up to the task, racking up eight saves on the night to keep the Grizzly offense off the board for the first time in five matches this season.
Fabio Aiello netted the game's lone score 20 minutes after the half.
With the loss, GGC dropped to 3-1-1 on the year, and HC improved to 3-0.
Matt Redgrave, a defender, was the Grizzlies' biggest offensive threat once again, finishing the night with eight shots, mostly from set pieces. The Englishman has been a potent offensive weapon from dead balls, and he currently leads the Green and Gray with four goals this season.
Samuel Sampaio Gomes finished second on the team with four shots on the night, and Martin Toribio was also dangerous, directing both of his shots on target. John O'Connor, Jack Gurr and Matti Puranen each saw their efforts saved as well.
The Grizzlies will close out their Indiana road swing on Saturday at 7 p.m. as they are set to take on host Goshen in the tournament finale.
NOTES: Holy Cross was the first-ever opponent from Indiana that GGC has played … GGC is now 6-1 all-time in neutral site contests … Lewis Sharpe, a junior goalkeeper, has started all but one game of his Grizzly career … GGC is now 15-6-2 all-time in the month of September.
