Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score
LAWRENCEVILLE - The Georgia Gwinnett softball team saw two school-record streaks snapped on Tuesday afternoon, but the Grizzlies didn't go down without a fight, coming up just short in an impressive comeback bid against No. 2 Auburn-Montgomery at Grizzly Softball Complex.
The team was dealt an 8-0 loss in the day's first game, bringing an end to a 22-game home winning streak and a 12-game run overall, and it looked bleak in game two as the Grizzlies (32-14) trailed 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, the team was able to respond with four scores in the frame, but ultimately stranded the tying run in scoring position en route to a 6-5 loss.
AUM, which rallied behind an outstanding pitching performance from Cassie Jones over both games, improved to 36-6 on the year. Jones, an All-American a year ago, allowed just four hits and struck out 10 in the first game, and she was later called upon for the save in game two, striking out the final two batters to secure the sweep.
Cassidy Littlefield, who ended the first game 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs, got the late Grizzly rally started with a two-run double with one out in the seventh. Mary Burk picked up her second hit of the day moments later to cut the deficit to two, and a wild pitch scored Littlefield to bring the Grizzlies within one. Unfortunately for the Green and Gray, Abby Hulsey and Haley Thompson, who combined to go 3-for-4 with a pair of walks vs. Jones in the first game, proved unsuccessful against the Warhawk ace fanned them in back-to-back at-bats to end the contest.
Katie Lange made the start in circle for GGC in the second game, ending with six earned runs on 10 hits and a pair of strikeouts over 4.1 innings, and Chelsi Palazzo picked up the final eight outs without allowing a score.
Ashley Beyke started in the opener, allowing four runs on six hits over 6.1 innings.
Lange and Beyke's record dropped to 10-6 and 9-5, respectively.
The doubleheader marked the regular season finale for the Green and Gray, and GGC will return to action on April 30 with the start of the A.I.I. Tournament, which will be played at Grizzly Softball Complex for a second consecutive season.
