Softball Stays Unbeaten at Home with Agnes Scott Sweep

April 15, 2015

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE - It didn't come easy for the Georgia Gwinnett softball team on Tuesday evening, but as has been the case all season at Grizzly Softball Complex, the Green and Gray found a way to win, moving to 20-0 at home with 3-2 and 4-1 victories over visiting Agnes Scott.

"I'm very proud of the way that this team has continued to defend the fortress," GGC Head Coach Kat Ihlenburg said. "Chelsi Palazzo and Mary Burk were each outstanding today and both were major contributors to the wins, and that's why they've been mainstays in the line-up all season."

The Grizzlies have now won eight consecutive games and sit at 28-12 on the year, and Agnes Scott fell to 7-23.

The day's opener brought on one of the biggest challenges to GGC's home unbeaten streak, as a late rally saw the visiting Scotties grab a 2-1 lead in the sixth, but fittingly, it was Cassidy Littlefield who helped along a Grizzly rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring the winning run on a Burk single.

Littlefield, who ended 4-for-4 in the contest, was the one to tie things up, picking up a two-out single to drive in Tori Heinemann. She then stole second to move into scoring position and set the stage for Burk's heroics.

Littlefield also scored the game's opening tally, singling and stealing second in the fifth before heads-up running on a Burk groundout allowed her to score.

However, the lead proved short-lived as ASC took advantage of a pair of errors in the sixth, which resulted in two runs for the visitors from Decatur.

Katie Lange, who came on in relief for starter Ashley Beyke, didn't allow an earned run over the game's final three frames, surrendering three hits and improving to 8-5 on the season.

Ashleigh Simmons led the Grizzly effort in the day's second game, doubling twice and finishing 2-for-3 at the plate.

Chelsi Palazzo, who was 4-for-6 at the plate over both games, was given the nod in the circle and allowed one run over the first three innings before Kayla Byrom took over to toss a scoreless final four frames. Byrom was credited with the win, and the Statham native moved to 9-3 for the year.

The Grizzlies opened up the scoring quickly with two runs in the opening stanza before tacking on another pair in the fourth, which would prove more than enough to get past the Scotties.

GGC will continue its homestand later this week, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday vs. Faulkner and continuing Saturday with games against Montreat.
