BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Ashley Beyke and Katie Lange combined to put on an impressive pitching display on Saturday as the Georgia Gwinnett softball team allowed just two runs over 14 innings in a doubleheader sweep of Coastal Georgia.
"The whole team came out ready to play today, and the defense played very well behind Ashley and Katie," GGC Head Coach Kat Ihlenburg said. "They were both very sharp, and they didn't try to do too much. Offensively, Haley and Cassidy had great days too, and we were able to come up with the timely hits to get the wins."
The wins marked the first time this season that the Grizzlies have swept an away doubleheader as the team moved to 19-9 on the year, winning the games by scores of 4-0 and 7-2.
The Mariners dropped to 3-12 for the year.
Beyke began the day strong for the Green and Gray as she allowed just three hits en route to tossing a complete game shutout to move to 6-3 on the year, and Lange followed up in the afternoon game, moving to 5-3 after logging her fourth complete game.
The Grizzlies collected 13 hits in the opener, led by a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance from Haley Thompson as five different players recorded multiple hits in the contest.
Cassidy Littlefield got the scoring started by sending the first pitch of the third inning over the fence in left for her sixth home run of the year, and Thompson followed up with a two-out RBI single to double the advantage later in the frame.
Thompson came up big again in the top of the seventh, singling home two more to make it 4-0.
In the day's second game, Abby Hulsey was the primary offensive weapon, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Littlefield enjoyed another strong outing, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of scores as the team picked up nine hits.
After giving up a score in the opening stanza, Thompson tripled and scored in the second to tie things up, and a Littlefield double and Hulsey single an inning later handed the Grizzlies the lead for good.
Hulsey drove in two more scores in a four-run fifth, and Littlefield brought in another an inning later before the Mariners picked up a consolation score in the sixth to account for the final score.
GGC will return to action on Sunday with a doubleheader at Middle Georgia, and first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
NOTES: GGC is 37-20-1 all-time in the month of March ... GGC is 17-11 all-time vs. schools from Georgia ... The Grizzlies have hit more home runs this season (19) than in either of the first two seasons in school history.
