March 20, 2015

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE - Ty Abbott's historic senior season continued on Friday as the Milton native enjoyed yet another day to remember in a pair of lopsided victories at Grizzly Baseball Complex as fifth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett routed visiting Ohio State Lima by seven-inning scores of 13-0 and 18-2.

Abbott, who had already laid claim to the school's all-time home run crown earlier in the season, took control of the single-season record with two more on Friday night to up his total to six for the year. He also collected seven runs batted in over the course of a 5-for-5 day, scoring four times. His single-season RBI total of 51 is tied with Sloan Strickland's previous school record, and with 97 for his career, he's now the lone record holder in the category as well, surpassing Robbie Payne's previous mark of 90.

Abbott was far from the only Grizzly to etch his name in school history on Friday night as Arsenio Watlington stole a pair of bases in the opening game and another in the second to take his season total out to a nation-leading 33 and tie Phillip Bates single-season mark.

GGC's offense picked up where it left off a night ago, pounding out 15 hits in the afternoon game as nine different players registered a hit, including six who enjoyed two-hit outings. Brady Shoppe led the way, ending 2-for-4 with five runs batted in, and each of the trio of Watlington, Marcus McCorkle and Jereid Woods finished 2-for-3 with two scores.

A leadoff double and Abbott sacrifice fly in the first inning proved to be just a warning of what was to come as the Grizzlies went on to touch home four times in the third and then thrice more in the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

Davis Adkins pitched just three innings in the game as he combined with Heath Durand, Austin Smith and Jovanni Cruz to throw a four-hit shutout. Adkins improved to 2-1 on the year.

GGC would send 10 to the plate over the course of a five-run sixth to account for the game's final score.

The Grizzlies recorded a further 16 hits in the second game, led by a 3-for-3, four-RBI showing from Abbott as the senior deposited two home runs over the fence in left and came up just short of another has he belted a ball off the top of the fence.

OSU Lima took their first lead of the series with a run in the first, but it was short-lived as the Grizzlies went on to score five runs in both the first and third as well as a run apiece in the second and fourth before putting up six in the fifth.

Tyler Oglesby moved to 3-0 on the mound after tossing four two-hit innings with an earned run, and the trio of Ryan Turner, Josh Mullis and Andy Threatt allowed just a single hit and unearned run over the game's final three frames as GGC picked up a sixth consecutive victory.

GGC and OSU Lima will return to Grizzly Baseball Complex on Saturday at 2 p.m. to wrap up the four-game set.

NOTES: GGC has never lost a home three- or four-game series ... The Grizzlies carry a 73-20 all-time mark in Lawrenceville ... GGC is 43-13 all-time in the month of March ... GGC has out-scored OSU Lima 155-25 over the course of the 11 games that the two schools have played.
