March 19, 2015

Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE - The Georgia Gwinnett offense topped 20 runs for the second time in three days on Thursday night as the fifth-ranked Grizzlies pounded out a school-record-tying 22 hits in a 21-1 seven-inning victory over visiting Ohio State Lima at Grizzly Baseball Complex.

With the win, GGC moved to 24-5 on the season as the team posted 20-or-more runs for the fifth time in school history and the third time this season. The Grizzlies also further padded its nation-leading totals in runs and runs per game.

The record hits total matches the mark set in Sunday's victory over Rochester.

Eight different Grizzlies enjoyed multiple-hit outings, and three others registered a single hit as 49 batters made the walk to the plate in just six innings of at-bats. As has been the case for much of the year, Ty Abbott led the assault by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of scores and five runs batted in. Brian Jacobs also put together a three-hit outing, and Marcus McCorkle was 3-for-5 with four scores.

The Grizzlies scored in all but one inning, pushing a pair across in the first, seven in the second and six in the third as the team ran out to an early 15-0 lead. GGC would score another in the fourth before the Barons got on the board in the sixth.

Alex Roberts snapped a two game skid on the mound by recording his sixth win of the season, holding the Barons to a single run and striking out seven over five innings.

Joseph Boatright and Christian Turnipseed would come on in relief and combined for five strikeouts over the final two frames as the Grizzlies picked up a fourth consecutive victory.

For the Barons, Dylan Clifton-Lorton and Shannon Conway each had two-hit days as the team was held to five hits on the day.

The two teams will return to action on Friday with a doubleheader, set to begin at 4 p.m. The second game will follow approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first.

NOTES: The Grizzlies carry a 71-20 all-time mark in Lawrenceville ... GGC is 41-13 all-time in the month of March ... Alex Roberts and his career 131 strikeouts trails Tyler Carpenter's record total by just 38.
