Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score
DAYTON, Tenn. - The Georgia Gwinnett softball team saw a five-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday evening as they were unable to come from behind for a second consecutive game, splitting a doubleheader at Bryan.
After holding on for an 8-6 victory in the day's opening game, the Grizzlies fell in walk-off fashion by a score of 6-5 in the second. GGC, which is currently receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll, now sits at 15-9 on the year, and Bryan dropped to 8-8.
"We played well enough to win both games today, but we couldn't finish off the second one," GGC Head Coach Kat Ihlenburg said. "We showed the kind of character that we need to show by putting those comebacks together, but we're still learning how to win these kinds of close games."
After Grizzly starter Kayla Byrom and reliever Ashley Beyke combined to give up five runs through the first three innings in game one, Chelsi Palazzo put the Green and Gray on the comeback trail, leading off the fourth with a double. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Jordyn Fones and a Bryan error cut the deficit to three at 5-2. Cassidy Littlefield would single home two more scores, and an Abby Hulsey sacrifice fly tied it up.
GGC would touch home once in each of the ensuing three innings before a pair of singles netted the Lions a consolation run in the bottom of the seventh.
Four different Grizzlies enjoyed two-hit outings in the game as the team combined for 10 hits in the contest. Hulsey and Littlefield led the pack, chipping in a pair of runs batted in apiece.
In the second game, GGC seemed to have the edge after grabbing a 5-4 lead in the seventh, but a pair of errors proved costly as Mariam Wood singled home Sarah Hundley to hand the Lions a walk-off victory.
Once again, Bryan enjoyed an early advantage, scoring in each of the first two innings before a Littlefield single and a pair of Lion miscues put the Green and Gray on the board.
Littlefield would prove to be the primary threat in the second game, finishing as the only Grizzly with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 at the plate with two walks, two runs and a stolen base.
Four walks and an error resulted in two more scores for the Grizzlies in the fifth, but the lead was only temporary as a Becca Zimmerman double and an error moments later made it 4-3 in favor of the Lions.
Littlefield and Alycia Fields would each score to push GGC ahead in the seventh, ultimately setting the stage for Bryan's late rally.
Beyke, who came on in relief in both games, finished the day was given the decision in each to drop to 5-3 on the season.
The Grizzlies will return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Southern Wesleyan. The games were originally scheduled for Thursday but have been moved up due to expected inclement weather. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
