LAWRENCEVILLE - The top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett men's tennis team has never lost to a fellow NAIA member, and that streak was extended in impressive fashion on Sunday as the Grizzlies ran out to a dominating 9-0 victory over visiting 23rd-ranked SCAD Savannah at GGC Tennis Facility.
"I thought that men took care of business and played extremely well," GGC Head Coach Chase Hodges said. "We've won four in a row now, and I think they're really starting to hit their stride and play great tennis. We're getting better every day, and we should be playing our best tennis by May. That's what it's all about."
With the win, GGC moves to 9-1 on the year while the Bees dropped to 4-4.
For the second consecutive day, the Green and Gray rolled past the visitors in doubles to gain momentum. Matias Hatem and Luke Morland set the tone early, winning 8-0 over Yulin Liu and Sean Hajdu, and the team of Connor Clements and Jordan Cox, which is currently ranked No. 1 in the country, won 8-4 over Kenta Naka and Joao Freitas. Lachlan McPhee and Kevin Konfederak rounded things out with an 8-4 win over Bobby Brand and Josh Tewes-McCoy.
Four of GGC's five ranked singles players saw action in singles play, with second-ranked Cox taking home a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Naka at No. 1, and fifth-ranked Konfederak winning 6-1, 6-1 vs. Freitas on line two. At the third spot, No. 42 Clements won 6-3, 6-3 over Yulin Liu, and 40th-ranked McPhee beat Hajdu 6-1, 6-1 on Court 4, taking his singles record to a perfect 9-0 this season.
"For Lachlan to come out and be 9-0 as a freshman is very impressive," Hodges said. "That's just a testament to his work ethic. We all know how much work he puts into improving, and it's nice to see it translate to success in matches."
Hatem, the nation's sixth-ranked player, did not participate in singles.
At the last two spots, Tony Licata beat Brand 6-2, 6-2, and Morland handed Tewes-McCoy a 6-1, 6-0 decision.
The Grizzlies will return to action on Tuesday against the University of the Cumberlands, and the match will be the first-ever tennis match broadcast live on the Grizzly Digital Network.
