Grizzlies Celebrate Homecoming with Tennessee Wesleyan Rout

Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE – In what head coach Chris Kouns would call the most complete performance of the season for his Georgia Gwinnett women's soccer team, the Grizzlies routed visiting Tennessee Wesleyan 5-0 to celebrate GGC's second-ever homecoming in style at Grizzly Soccer Complex.

"I think that, especially with four players missing, everyone who could step up tonight, stepped up," Kouns said. "That was vital to us playing a complete match tonight, and that's what you'd like to see heading into the conference tournament. We've now won four in a row, and I think from the way the girls were smiling after the match, you could tell that they knew that was one of the most complete efforts that they've put in this year."

With the win, the Grizzlies moved to 9-5-1 and extended their school-record home winning streak out to 12 matches. GGC is now 8-0 at home this season.

TWC dropped to 6-7-3.

It was a sustained assault on the Bulldog goal on Saturday night as the Grizzlies out-shot the visitors from Athens, Tenn., 21-6, but it took 29 minutes for Caitlin Berry to finally break through and open up the flood gates. The freshman out of Burnham on Sea, England, found the back of the net off of an Amanda Yarger corner to finally give the Green and Gray the lead.

It would take just two minutes for GGC to double the advantage, this time through Melissa Lay, and Nikki LeFevre further added to the total 16 seconds later with a strike of her own to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead after 31 minutes.

Following the half, Bristol Countess, who supplied the assist on LeFevre strike, put her own name in the scoring column with a goal in the 64th minute. Countess leads the team in both goals and assists with eight apiece.

LeFevre closed out the rout with her 21st career goal in the 67th minute. The McDonough native now has five for the season, and she stands just one goal away from moving into second on the GGC all-time goal-scoring list.

GGC will return to action next Wednesday with a trip to top-ranked Lindsey Wilson. Kickoff from Columbia, Ky., is slated for 8 p.m.
