Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – The Georgia Gwinnett women's soccer team had no answer to a flurry of early goals on Monday as the Grizzlies fell 10-1 to the host Bulldogs at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.
"We did not represent ourselves in an acceptable manner today," GGC head coach Chris Kouns said. "We had a bad day, and that happens, but this one got out of control quickly. We need to be able to show more fight, and we just didn't do what we needed to do to be successful today."
Connie Awuku-Darkoh led the barrage for the Bulldogs (6-7), scoring the first of her five goals in the fourth minute, and Mariah Aplin followed up four minutes later to double the advantage. Emily Shires, who ultimately finished the day with four assists, found the back of the net in 17th before setting up Awuku-Darkoh for another three minutes later.
Awuku-Darkoh would complete her first-half hat trick in the 23rd, and the Bulldogs went on to add five more goals before Lauren Moss picked out Dominque Fletcher for a consolation score in the 84th minute.
"While the team as a whole didn't perform the way that I would've liked, we did have some individual players who really stepped up," Kouns said. "It was very well deserved for Moss to have gotten an assist in this match because she was a warrior out there for us. That also goes for Lina Blomqvist, Melissa Hanken, Georgia Barton and Kelsey Griswold too. They battled well for us, and hopefully that gives us something to build on for Wednesday.
GGC (5-5-1) will return to action vs. Reinhardt on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Grizzly Soccer Complex. The match will be broadcast live on the Grizzly Digital Network.
