LAWRENCEVILLE - The top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett men's tennis team extended its winning streak out to 24 consecutive matches with another memorable victory on Saturday as the Grizzlies shut out visiting Citadel in 9-0 fashion at GGC Tennis Facility.
The Citadel represents the second-ever NCAA Division I opponent to take on the Grizzlies, and the school is also the second to fall prey to the Grizzlies in one-sided fashion as GGC beat Tennessee Tech 6-1 last season.
"The team played at an extremely high level today, which is great to see in just the second match of the season," GGC Head Coach Chase Hodges said. "We always enjoy when we get a chance to go up against DI competition, and we thank The Citadel for making the trip out here to play us."
Once again, the Grizzlies rode a strong doubles round out to grab the early 3-0 advantage over the visitors from South Carolina. Connor Clements and Jordan Cox faced the stiffest challenge as they won 8-5 over Peter Bleach and Nick Bradley at No. 1, and at the second line, Kevin Konfederak and Matias Hatem won 8-3 over Artemie Amari and Oliver Dedding. In the third spot, Luke Morland and Lachlan McPhee handed an 8-2 decision to Connor Grady and Jackson Pride.
In singles, Konfederak took advantage of his first chance to play at No. 1 singles, and the freshman out of Buenos Aires, Argentina impressed, winning both sets in 6-0 fashion to beat Amari. Cox, the No. 2 player in the country coming into the weekend, won 6-2, 6-3 over Bleach in the second spot, and seventh-ranked Hatem registered a 6-0, 6-2 victory to close out the top half of the line-up.
In the bottom half, 43rd-ranked Clements beat Dedding 6-0, 6-1 in the fourth position, and Tony Licata won 6-1, 6-1 vs. Pride. McPhee, who carries a national No. 17 ranking, rounded out singles play by beating Joe Bove 6-1, 6-1.
Morland also played an exhibition singles match vs. The Citadel, winning by a score of 6-0, 6-1 against Ryan Templet.
The Grizzly men will return to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. as both the men's and women's teams will play host to Middle Georgia at GGC Tennis Facility. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 10 a.m.
