The Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team got a career high seven saves from senior goalkeeper Alex Hays in a 2-0 losing effort to Mobile (Ala.) on Friday night in stormy conditions at the 2014 UMobile Classic.

The game was delayed for over an hour during the first half due to severe weather in the area, and a quick two-goal spurt by the Rams (3-1-1) after play resumed proved to be the difference.

The Grizzlies were outshot by a 22-11 margin overall but bounced back to produce several chances in the second half.

“We did really well to improve and get better in the second half to compete at this level but it proves what we needed to correct from the first half,” said GGC head coach Domenic Martelli. “We created a number of chances and they had limited chances themselves. In the first half we gave up a goal on the corner kick right after the lightning delay and another late in the first half.”

The Rams converted just seconds out of the first-half break, with Leah Corse heading in a corner kick in the 29th minute. Just over 10 minutes later, Tyler-Rae Molloy made it 2-0.

The Grizzlies amassed eight shots in the second half as Andreah Creevey led GGC with four, but the ball would not cross the back line for the Grizzlies on the night.

Both teams are receiving votes in the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll.

The loss snaps GGC’s two-game winning streak as the team’s six-game road trip continues on Saturday. Georgia Gwinnett will face No. 9 William Carey (Miss.) in Mobile at 5 p.m. central.
