Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Georgia Gwinnett Head Coach Steve DeCou challenged his men's soccer team at halftime against Auburn-Montgomery, and the team responded forcefully, scoring twice in the second half beat the second-ranked Warhawks at the AUM Soccer complex.

"The halftime talk was more about trying to show what we have in us," DeCou said. "They came out, and it was the kind of response that a coach wants to see. To come out here and play that way against last year's national finalist is great."

After AUM (5-2) spent the majority of the first half on the front foot, including a 32nd-minute goal from Lukas Metzinger, it was very much a different story in the second as the Grizzlies (5-1) had an avalanche of scoring chances in the game's last half-hour. Samuel Gampaio Gomes officially put GGC on the comeback trail, taking a pass from Ibrahima Sissoko and putting it into the back of the net for the equalizer in the 64th minute.

Callum Mordey played the role of hero just two minutes later after an impressive set-up from Martin Lugo teed up the Englishman for his first goal of the season.

"I got injured on this pitch last year, and it's brilliant to come back and get a win today," the Sunderland native said. "Since I've been in America, I think this is the best win I've had, even including the conference tournament last year."

The Warhawks would prove to still have some firepower left, finishing the match with 27 shots to GGC's 11, but Lewis Sharpe and his defense was able to hold them at bay as he finished the match with nine saves.

The Green and Gray will return to action on Sunday with a noon kickoff against No. 14 William Carey. The match will be part of a doubleheader with the women, and both games are slated to be webcast as the NSCAA College Game of the Week. It'll also be Gwinnett Sports Medicine Day at the Grizzly Soccer Complex, and fans with a Gwinnett Medical Center badge will receive free admission.
