The fourth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett men’s tennis team remained unbeaten by defeating NCAA Division III No. 5 Kenyon (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon at the GGC Tennis Facility in a tight 5-4 affair.
Sophomore Tony Kostadinov clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at sixth singles. GGC captured two of the three doubles points and added victories and third and fourth singles in straight sets.
Playing just their third home match of the year, the Grizzlies improved to 8-0 overall and dropped the Lords to 6-4.
The Grizzlies earned two points in doubles play, each by a pair playing its first match together. Freshman Nathan de Veer and sophomore Mark Verryth pulled out an 8-3 win at first doubles, while sophomore Matias Hatem and freshman Connor Clements also won by an 8-3 margin.
The Lords won at first and second singles, including one match by retirement, plus a three-set affair between Clements and Jacob Huber on the number five line.
With the match level at 4-4, Kostadinov defeated Colin Haas to give GGC its third win of the year over a ranked Division II or III squad.
The Grizzlies now take on their first-ever Division I opponent in a dual match, hosting Tennessee Tech at 11 a.m. on Monday.
