Grizzlies Get Pair of Walk-Off Wins in Extras

March 2, 2014

GGC 6, Bryan 5

GGC 5, Bryan 4

The Georgia Gwinnett softball team (5-2) picked up its first two victories at the Grizzly Softball Complex, both in walk-off fashion in extra innings over Bryan (6-5), in Lawrenceville on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Kayla Byrom (3-1) picked up two wins in the circle, the first in relief and the second in a complete game.

Game One: GGC 6, Bryan 5 (8 Innings)

With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, senior Heather Kilar delivered a walk-off single into center field to score Carrie Ann Bullard from third base to give the Grizzlies their first win at their home stadium, which opened on the last day of the 2013 season.

Georgia Gwinnett came out on top of a back and forth contest that saw three ties and three lead changes. Cassidy Littlefield led the Grizzly offense with three hits including a triple, three RBIS, two stolen bases and a run scored.

Byrom earned the win after pitching 3.0 innings of relief, allowing two runs on two hits. Starter Ashley Beyke struck out five batters but did not factor in the decision.

Bryan scored one run on a bases loaded walk in the first inning. But the Grizzly defense was able to strand the bases loaded by getting a strikeout and a ground ball.

The Grizzlies scored a run in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Heaven Hinton that scored Littlefield from third. Littlefield reached on a bunt single and moved around the bases on two stolen bases.

In the fourth, Littlefield hit a two-out two-run single that gave the Grizzlies a 3-1 lead.

The Lions hit two-run game-tying home runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Both times, the Lions trailed by two and the long balls were hit by sisters Heidi and Heather Daniel.

GGC scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Simmons scored on a fielder’s choice after reaching on a single and Littlefield then belted an RBI triple that scored Kilar.

Game Two: GGC 5, Bryan 4 (8 Innings)

Junior Jordyn Fones struck a bases-loaded, walk-off single to lift the Grizzlies over the Lions in the second game of the double header.

Byrom scattered 10 Lion hits over 8.0 innings and allowed four runs to earn a complete-game win.  Halley Ingram paced the Grizzlies with three runs driven in on two hits, both with two outs.

Bryan got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second on four hits.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Ingram hit a two-run single up the middle to tie the game.

GGC then took a lead on an Ingram RBI double in the fourth inning. Bruns reached on an infield single with two outs and scored on the extra-base hit.

The Lions took a lead with two runs in the top of the seventh on a pair of doubles and a Grizzly error, but GGC would tie in the bottom of the inning.

Georgia Gwinnett loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a bloop single. Hinton scored on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Morales, but the Grizzlies stranded the bases loaded on a pair of strikeouts to send the second game into extra innings.

After blanking the Lions in the top of the eighth inning, the Grizzlies got a runner to third base and drew intentional walks to load the bases with no outs, setting up Fones’ hit.

The Grizzlies visit Agnes Scott on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader before playing the first of three straight home series on Friday afternoon against Columbia (S.C.).
