Softball Rallies for Walkoff Win in Opener, 7-6

Feb. 8, 2014

Box Score

Note: Due to heavy rain in the Daytona Beach area, Saturday's action has been cancelled.

The Georgia Gwinnett softball team rallied back from a 6-1 deficit and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday to defeat Southeastern University (Fla.) on day one of the Embry-Riddle Opening Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., 7-6.

Inclement weather caused the tournament schedule to be altered as the Grizzlies (1-0) opened up against the Fire (0-1).

Junior Cassidy Littlefield and sophomore Alycia Fields each had two hits for GGC, while senior Marlee Morales drove in a pair of runs.

Sophomore pitcher Ashley Beyke picked up the win by tossing a complete game with four strikeouts.

The Grizzlies scored a lone run in the third inning and found themselves down by five after Southeastern's half of the fourth, but a five-run rally in the sixth inning helped set up the win.

Georgia Gwinnett played a scrimmage earlier in the day against Daytona State.

The schedule has been updated for the remainder of the weekend. The Grizzlies will play Mobile on Saturday at 12 p.m. before finishing with a Sunday doubleheader against Embry-Riddle beginning at 10 a.m.
