Men's Tennis Wins 8-1 at #15 William Carey

Feb. 15, 2014

GGC 8, William Carey 1

The fifth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett men’s tennis team defeated No. 15 William Carey, 8-1, on Saturday in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The win is the second of three-straight ranked opponents that the Grizzlies (4-0) face this weekend.

“Our men continue to pick up wins over ranked teams,” said Grizzlies head coach Chase Hodges. “An 8-1 win on the road is impressive and we look forward to facing a tough Xavier team tomorrow.”

The Grizzlies tangle with No. 6 Xavier (La.) in Hattiesburg on Sunday in a neutral setting.

Saturday’s highlights came early and often, starting with a hard-fought 9-8 (7-3) win at first doubles by Mark Verryth and Tony Kostadinov.

Bruno Tiberti and Connor Clements sailed to an 8-1 win while Luke Morland and Matias Hatem pulled out an 8-5 victory.

In singles play, Verryth (3-1 on the season) dropped a 7-6, 4-6, 12-10 battle with William Carey’s Ricky Keppeler, but the remaining matches all went the way of GGC.

Tiberti (8-2), Hatem (4-0), Moberg (7-2), Kostadinov (6-2) and Clements (3-0) each came through with straight-sets wins for the Grizzlies, with no player dropping more than four total games.

William Carey fell to 1-2 with the loss.
