The No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett men’s tennis team opened a busy weekend by taking out 13th-ranked Belhaven on Friday afternoon in Jackson, Miss., winning by a 6-0 margin to remain unbeaten on the year.
The match was halted after being clinched, with GGC taking the three early doubles points and winning each singles match in two sets.
The Grizzlies (3-0) move on to Hattiesburg, Miss., where they will face No. 15 William Carey on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. GGC then plays No. 6 Xavier (La.) in a neutral match in Hattiesburg on Sunday.
Belhaven, which has gone to the NAIA national tournament the last two years, fell to 1-1 with Friday’s defeat.
“Our men’s team beat a quality Belhaven team today that is #13 in the nation,” said Grizzlies head coach Chase Hodges. “We look forward to a tough test with William Carey tomorrow.”
Grizzly sophomore Mark Verryth pulled out a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win at first singles over Andre de Almeida and teamed with sophomore Tony Kostadinov at first doubles for an 8-2 win.
Bruno Tiberti and Connor Clements came through with an 8-6 victory at second doubles, while Tiberti sealed a 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles.
Matias Hatem rolled, 6-1, 6-2 at third singles and teamed with Luke Morland for an 8-2 win on the third doubles line.
The Grizzlies have won each match thus far by shutout.
