ATHENS, Tenn. - Two goals in the latter part of the first half proved to be the difference on Saturday as the Georgia Gwinnett men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory at Tennessee Wesleyan.
With the victory, the 12th-ranked Grizzlies improve 8-2-1 on the year, and TWC drops to 6-6-1.
"I think we played very well today, but we hit a bit of a wall in the second half," GGC Head Coach Steve DeCou said. "It was great to be out there playing again, and definitely to go out on the road and get a win. We aren't where we need to be yet, but we're getting there."
After missing the first nine matches of the season, James Toombs has been impactful over the last two as the sophomore found the back of the net for the second straight match. The goal, which was the ultimate winner, came in the 37th minute as Arijan Jaganjac slipped a ball through to Toombs, who slotted it home past TWC goalkeeper Jack Rushworth.
Jack Gurr picked up his first career goal just four minutes prior as Rushworth came out to punch a cross out of the box, but unfortunately for the Bulldogs, it fell to the feet of Gurr, who fired it into the back of an empty net.
In the second half, Ben Wilks pulled TWC within one with a goal in the 54th, but GGC goalkeeper Lewis Sharpe proved to be up to the task of holding the Bulldogs at bay as he finished the day with eight saves.
The Grizzlies will return to action with a trip to SCAD Savannah next week.
