ATHENS, Tenn. - After watching the Georgia Gwinnett men grab a victory in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader with Tennessee Wesleyan, the women's team picked up goals from Bethany Johnson and Nikki LeFevre to make it a clean sweep for the Grizzlies with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Bulldogs.
Bethany Johnson, who scored the game's opening goal, facilitated the second score, feeding Nikki LeFevre in the 93rd minute for the sophomore's fifth goal of the season. The win marks the first overtime victory of the season for Green and Gray (7-5-1), who made a habit of winning late last year, racking up four in 2013.
"Bethany had a great goal and an awesome assist, and I really think we had a great game from our back four," GGC Head Coach Domenic Martelli said. "We had a lot of players give us really good minutes today, and it was just a great team win for us."
The Grizzly back four of Hannah Engelbracht, Tiffany Rodriguez, Kelsey Griswold and Melissa Lay have played a big role in GGC's impressive defensive form in recent weeks. TWC (6-7-1) is the only opponent to score against them over the past four games. Magaly Gutierrez has held down the goalkeeping spot for the majority of the run, and she was strong again on Saturday, picking up three saves.
Johnson opened the scoring with a 28th minute tally before TWC's Kaitlyn Poulakis evened things up five minutes into the second half.
The Grizzlies will return to action next weekend as Tennessee Temple will make the trek to Lawrenceville.
