Junior Felicia Shelton had a team-high five hits Tuesday as the Georgia Gwinnett softball team battled Thomas University to a doubleheader split in Thomasville.
The Grizzlies scored three times in the first inning en route to a 7-4 win in the opener. In game two, Shelton accounted for GGC’s only run in a 2-1 defeat.
Georgia Gwinnett now stands at 14-20 on the year while Thomas is level at 18-18.
Ashley Beyke struck out six in a complete game effort during the Grizzlies’ win. Tiffany Bailey held Thomas to two runs in game two as the Night Hawks broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with the deciding score.
Shelton scored three times while Heaven Hinton homered and drove in three runs. Marlee Morales and Heather Kilar added a pair of his for GGC.
The Grizzlies padded an early lead with four scores in the fourth inning of game one to take a 7-0 lead. Thomas scored three times in the bottom of the inning but strong GGC defense and 10 hits sparked the Grizzlies to the win.
Head coach Kat Ihlenburg’s club went error-free over the two games.
Alycia Fields drove in the Grizzlies’ lone score in game two as Jessica Johnson held GGC to five total hits.
The teams were playing for the second time this year after the Night Hawks won a pair of games in Lawrenceville in March.
Georgia Gwinnett returns to the diamond Saturday, visiting Martin Methodist for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
