Lombardo Keys Grizzlies to Split with Eagles

April 13, 2013

GGC 4, Emory 3

Emory 4, GGC 1

Sophomore Angelo Lombardo had four hits, including a triple, to pace the Georgia Gwinnett baseball team Saturday in a doubleheader split against NCAA squad Emory University at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.

The Grizzlies rallied from a late deficit in game one with two sixth-inning scores for a 4-3 win before mustering just one score in a 4-1 defeat in the second game.

Christian Van Camp and Kyle Norton added a pair of hits while Frank Warren earned his fourth victory of the year.

“Frank Warren pitched really well for us today,” said GGC head coach Brad Stromdahl. “Joe Albertson did a good job in getting the save. Angelo had a really strong day for us against a good Emory team. I liked way we competed in the first game. We just made a couple of mistakes in the second game that hurt us.”

Game One- GGC 4, Emory 3

The Grizzlies built an early 2-0 lead starting in the second when Christian Van Camp doubled and scored on Austin Smith’s RBI single. Lombardo tripled and scored on a single by Billy Best.

The Eagles tied things with a two-run fourth.

A two-out error in the outfield cost the Grizzlies in the top of the sixth as Emory pulled in front, 3-2.

GGC struck right back in the bottom of the inning. Lombardo tied the game with a single into right field that scored pinch runner Jereid Woods from second. Kyle Norton later drove in Lombardo from third on a full count with two outs by lining a single down the right field line for a 4-3 GGC lead.

Warren pitched into the seventh, giving way to Albertson who needed just six pitches to earn the save.

Game Two- Emory 4, GGC 1

The Georgia Gwinnett bats amassed eight hits but Emory starter Paul Merolla tossed six shutout innings as the Eagles earned the split.

The Grizzlies stranded nine runners in the game as Lombardo’s two hits, including a double, led GGC once more.

Three GGC errors allowed a pair of unearned runs to score as Emory built a 4-0 lead.

Antonio Allen finally put the Grizzlies on the board in the seventh with a one-out double to the wall that scored pinch runner Justin White from first.

The Grizzlies couldn’t cut further into the deficit in falling to 14-7 at home this season.

Stromdahl’s squad returns to the diamond Tuesday, continuing a five-game homestand with two against Southern Poly, beginning at 5 p.m.
