Freshman Jereid Woods drove in three runs on four hits as the Georgia Gwinnett baseball team opened its series against Ohio State-Lima Thursday evening with a 16-7 victory at the Grizzly Baseball Complex in Lawrenceville.
The Grizzlies tallied 15 total hits on the night, scoring 12 times in the first two innings. Antonio Allen belted three hits and scored three runs while Robbie Payne added a 2-for-2 night with three RBIs.
Freshman Frank Warren earned his second victory on the mound by scattering four hits over five innings as the Grizzlies (13-6) remained unbeaten on their home field. The Barons fell to 2-4 on the year with the loss.
The Grizzlies came out swinging in the first inning, scoring four times on four hits. Payne, Phillip Bates and Christian Van Camp all had RBI hits.
The Barons scored three times in the second but an eight-spot for GGC in the bottom of the inning blew the game open. Allen and Payne each drove in a pair of runs to highlight an inning in which the Grizzlies sent 14 batters to the plate.
Georgia Gwinnett built a 14-4 lead through five innings, when the Barons pushed across three scores in the sixth.
Freshman reliever Joe Albertson tossed the final four innings of the game with a pair of strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.
The Grizzlies added their final two runs in the eighth with the help of Woods’ fourth single of the night.
The four-game series continues with a doubleheader on Friday in Lawrenceville beginning at 4:30 p.m.
